Grey hair.
Some love it.
Some dread it.
Some are stuck somewhere in between.
Whatever camp you’re in, there’s no denying that grey hair is having a moment—and the industry is finally catching up.
Gone are the days when your only option was full grey coverage every 4–6 weeks. Now, we have so many creative and beautiful ways to work with grey hair—whether you want to hide it, embrace it, or meet somewhere in the middle.
At Here Come The Blondes, we’re seeing more and more clients ask about grey blending vs grey coverage, and it’s something I love to talk about.
So if you’re wondering what might be right for you, let’s break it down…
What’s the difference between grey coverage and grey blending?
- Grey coverage means completely hiding your grey hair using a permanent colour. It’s usually done every 4–8 weeks, depending on regrowth, and gives a bold, solid result.
- Grey blending is a softer, more natural-looking approach. Instead of covering every strand, we use techniques like toning, highlights, lowlights or glossing to make your grey blend beautifully into your natural hair. The result is more lived-in, less harsh, and way lower maintenance.
There’s no right or wrong—just what suits you, your lifestyle, and how you want to feel when you look in the mirror.
If you’re curious about embracing your grey (but not quite ready to go “full silver fox”) here are some of my favourite ways to make it work for you…
1. Glazing Grey Hair with Semi-Permanent Colour
One of the best ways to blend grey without commitment is using a semi-permanent glaze.
Personally, I love using The Present Time by Davines—it gently softens the contrast between your grey and natural tones, giving your hair a healthy, dimensional finish without fully covering the grey.
It’s perfect for:
- Anyone with any amount of grey
- Clients wanting ultra low maintenance
- People who want to embrace the grey, but want it to look a little more polished
The result is soft, wearable, and incredibly flattering.
2. Baby Lights to Confuse the Eye (in a Good Way)
If you’ve got 30–50% grey, baby lights are magic.
These ultra-fine highlights mimic the natural way your hair lightens in the sun—and when placed strategically, they can make your grey hair look like it’s just another beautiful tone in your hair.
Want to elevate it even more? I love adding a few low lights underneath the blonde to create that extra pop and dimension. It makes the blend look intentional and seamless—and lets you have a bit of fun with tone and placement!
3. Colour Blocking for Bold Grey Patterns
If your grey comes in clumps—especially at the hairline or back of your head—you’re not alone.
Grey doesn’t always come in evenly, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing. In fact, it can be a feature!
By using colour blocking, we can highlight those areas and turn them into something dramatic, chic, and totally you. Think high-fashion meets natural texture. It’s edgy, creative, and works best when you want to make a statement without being high-maintenance.
4. Lowlighting to Reduce Grey—Without the Line
Not quite ready to fully embrace the grey? That’s absolutely fine.
We can use a lowlighting technique to soften and erase the majority of the grey, but keep just enough to stop that harsh regrowth line that often comes with full grey coverage.
This is an ideal middle ground. You still feel like you—but without the pressure of rebooking every 4 weeks. Plus, your hair keeps that beautiful, natural texture that’s so on-trend right now.
So… Should You Cover or Blend?
Here’s the honest truth: it’s completely personal.
Some of my clients will never give up full coverage—and I support that! But more and more are finding that blending gives them a fresher, softer, and far more manageable approach to working with their grey.
If you’re not sure what’s best for you, that’s where a colour consultation comes in.
At Here Come The Blondes, we’ll sit down, look at your hair, chat through your lifestyle, and come up with the perfect solution—whether that’s a glossy glaze, natural baby lights, bold colour blocking, or soft lowlights.
You deserve to love your hair again—grey and all.
